Low Vision Support Group

The Low Vision Support Group interests people with low vision caused by Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), Glaucoma, Cataracts, and other eye problems.  Study Group on age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, sataracts and othe eye problemsThey meet to discuss ongoing research and future cures.  ARMD affects one in three Americans over age 65.  The disorder affects the macula, the region of the retina that's responsible for "center vision."  This enables us to read, recognize faces, drive and perform other activities that require sharp vision.  Most cases of ARMD begins with the formation of drusen-thin yellow deposits that grow just behind the macula.  Known as "dry" ARMD, this condition can persist for years, usually causing only minor vision problems.

Unfortunately, one is ten of those who are diagnosed with dry ARMD go on to develop "wet" ARMD.  This form occurs when blood vessels under the retina leak fluid and form scar tissue damaging or distorting the smooth surface of the retina.  Wet ARMD can rob a person of central vision.

Glaucoma is the build up of pressure inside the eye.  This causes damage to the optic nerve which send visual messages to the brain.  Damage can be done before there is any noticeable vision loss, and the damage is irreversible.
